The Feast of Fools

A Festival in Paris
Public spectacle
At the Feast of Fools, Paris gathers for performances, ceremony, and mock authority. The crowd’s appetite for sensation eclipses Pierre Gringoire’s carefully made play.
A vulnerable performer
Esmeralda’s later prominence begins in the same festive world that treats outsiders as entertainment. Public attention will give her fame but little protection.
Dancing at the Grève

A Captivating Performance
Popular admiration
Esmeralda dances and sings at the Place de Grève with Djali, winning the crowd’s attention. Her art briefly gives her control of the public gaze.
A hostile observer
Claude Frollo calls her performance sacrilege and watches with growing fixation. Admiration and suspicion begin to gather around the same young woman.
The Failed Abduction

Seized in the Streets
Attack and rescue
Quasimodo and his companion seize Esmeralda as she walks home. Phoebus and the king’s archers intervene, and Esmeralda escapes while Quasimodo is arrested.
A dangerous beginning
The rescue links Esmeralda to Phoebus and leaves Quasimodo exposed to public punishment. The attack’s hidden instigator remains beyond her understanding.
The Accusation

A Case Built from Fear
Evidence distorted
After Phoebus is stabbed, Esmeralda and Djali face trial for sorcery and murder. Their innocent tricks are reinterpreted as proof by a court already disposed to condemn them.
Coerced confession
Torture breaks Esmeralda’s resistance, and the court sentences her to death. The legal process converts uncertainty into certainty by force.
The Final Execution

A Rescue Too Late
Flight and recapture
Esmeralda escapes Notre-Dame by boat with Pierre Gringoire and a silent companion. The companion is Claude Frollo, who offers escape only on terms of possession.
Death at the gallows
Esmeralda refuses him and is seized at the Rat-Hole. Her reunion with Gudule lasts only moments before the authorities execute her at the Grève.
